What edible plants can be grown under kitchen cabinets with fluorescent lighting?

By admin | April 21, 2009

My kitchen cabinets have fluorescent lights under them, and they are 18″ above the counter tops. Right now I have one small basil plant and it is doing extremely well. What else can I grow here that would do well? What would be the best herbs to grow in this short space? Are there any non-herbs ideal for this space? Much thanks.

how to dry fresh herbs?

By admin | April 10, 2009

basscl13 asked:

I grew some herbs this summer and have lots of them left over. I have to pull them up quickly before the frosting begins here. Is there a way I can I use during the dry winter? Is it worth the time? I have basil, parsley, rosemary, sage and oregano.

indoor garden?

By admin | April 6, 2009

I get the winter blues and I find the best way to cure them is to grow things. I usually do it about this time of year. Unfortuantley my plants dont make it past a month or two. I need an inexpensive way to grow my plants in my room. Its a pretty small room but I have a ton of natural light. Basicly 1 full wall of windows. Im looking to grow herbs. Thanks for the help and again i need it to be Cheap

Indoor garden?

By admin | April 5, 2009

achen asked:

I live in an apartment without a patio but I have two E/W facing windows, so I pretty much always have some sunlight.
Are there any relatively small plants(herbs, maybe?) that can be grown indoors, in a small planter, and without a whole lot of light?

Also, having a planter that hangs out of a window isn’t an option because there is a brick “lip” right outside both windows.

“Top 10″ of medicinal herbs grown Midatlantic region?

By admin | March 31, 2009

I am an avid gardener, and am very familiar with growing vegetables, fruits, and culinary herbs. I have recently become interested in the medicinal uses of herbs, and would like some ideas on what to plant in my garden, which is in Chester County, PA, just outside of Philadelphia. Space is not an issue, nor are locations dependent on partial shade, full sun, &c. (we have several gardens around the property which afford just about any combination of sun and shade, drainage, &c.).

So my question is, as I am just getting started with medicinal herbs and do not want to devote an *inordinate* amout of space or resources to them (i.e., I don’t want to start with a giant garden of 50 different medicinal herbs), what might be a good “Top 10″ (or Top 5 or 15, 8 or 12, whatever) of multi-use medicinal herbs. The ones most common in many preparations.

Please discount culinary herbs, which I already grow: basil, dill, oregano, marjoram, chives, parsley, rosemary, thyme.

Thanks for helping

What do you have in you garden or would like to have?

By admin | March 25, 2009

Claudia G asked:

I wish I had a garden…

I would have a blackberry tree,
a tree that is blue when juvenile called cider gum tree,
and a kiwifruit tree.

It would be awesome!

What about you?

Note
here is the cider gum tree, it is beautiful! though it turns green when mature, there are ways into making it never reach maturity.

sorry, the kiwifruit plant is a vine, not a tree

Can you leave a generator on for 3 months of more?

By admin | March 20, 2009

Mr.GreenThumb asked:

I’m trying to power some lights in the woods so I can grow some herbs, can I leave a generator on for 3 or 4 months while my herbs are growing?
It’s in the woods near my house so the noise isn’t a problem.
